New Affordable Apartments Provide Oakland Seniors With Housing Choices

Lakeside Senior Apartments provides a quality, affordable alternative for low-income and formerly homeless seniors in Oakland.

July 10, 2015 – Oakland, CA. On Tuesday, July 21, Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA), along with Oakland Housing Initiatives, Inc., will celebrate the grand opening of Lakeside Senior Apartments, 92 affordable homes for low-income and formerly homeless seniors in the Eastlake District of Oakland. The new community will provide affordable homes and comprehensive support services for people ages 55 and older with low incomes, with 32 of those homes set aside for seniors with special needs.

“The need for quality, affordable housing for seniors has never been greater. In two weeks, we received more than 2,400 applications for Lakeside. As our population ages, we are seeing our parents and grandparents being priced out of the communities they’ve dedicated their lives to. SAHA is proud to be able to offer affordable and supportive housing options to seniors in Oakland. Lakeside will allow residents to age in place close to family, friends and their community organizations”, says Susan Friedland, SAHA Executive Director.

Within walking distance of Lucky Supermarket and Pharmacy, parks and recreational opportunities around Lake Merritt, public transit and more, Lakeside will provide seniors with the amenities they need to live as independently as possible, and age in place with the dignity they deserve. Two community spaces, including a roof deck, garden and club house offer a wide range of programs to promote active living. "It is only through partnerships, including support and flexibility from HUD, that we are able to bring affordable housing into this thriving neighborhood, and we grateful for the opportunity this will provide generations of seniors in Oakland,” stated Eric Johnson, Oakland Housing Authority Executive Director. In addition to managing the building, SAHA, in partnership with the St. Mary’s Center, provides one-on-one case management and referral services for local and community based resources; and SAHA’s Resident Services Program prevents or delays the institutionalization of elderly and disabled residents by providing linkages to non-clinical, in-home supportive services. Along with design features specifically tailored to accessibility for older adults, Lakeside is a Platinum LEED for Homes building, featuring solar water heating, Energy Star appliances, a rooftop community garden, and low VOC building methods that improve indoor air quality.

Funding comes from the Oakland Housing Authority, Bay Area LISC, Wells Fargo Bank, California Community Reinvestment Corporation, California Department of Housing and Community Development , and the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco.

Lakeside was designed by David Baker Architects and built by James E. Roberts-Obayashi, Inc., general contractor.
