Jurors selected merit winners and one grand winner in over 60 categories, including affordable housing.

Known as one of the oldest and most prestigious competitions in the industry, the Gold Nugget Awards have recognized top innovators in design, planning, and development for the past 59 years. The program announced its 2022 grand honorees at an awards ceremony June 22 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center during PCBC, the Pacific Coast’s regional conference and trade show for real estate development.

This year’s competition drew 595 entries in 64 categories, including affordable, multifamily, mixed-use, single-family production, interior design, custom homes, commercial, renovations, and site planning. Jurors selected several merit winners in each grouping and elevated one project to become the grand winner.

The judging panel included Matt Alexander, vice president of development at The Cambridge Cos.; Daniel Gehman, principal at Danielian Associates; John McManus, founder of The Builder’s Daily; Matthew Porreca, design director at LPA Design Studios; Matthew Segal, architect and manager at Jonathan Segal, FAIA; and Symone Strong, associate editor at Builder and Multifamily Executive.

Here’s a roundup of seven affordable housing developments that garnered Gold Nugget grand awards.

Best Affordable Housing Community – under 30 du/acre: Alta Madrone, Sonoma, California
Developer: Satellite Affordable Housing Association; Builder: Midstate Construction; Architect: PYATOK architecture + urban design

Best Affordable Housing Community – 30 to 60 du/acre: Ivy Senior Apartments, San Diego
Developer: Wakeland Housing and Development Corp.; Builder: Allgire General Contractors; Architect: BNIM

Best Affordable Housing Community – 60 du/acre or more: Missouri Place, Los Angeles
Developer: Thomas Safran and Associates; Builder: Bernards Builders; Architect: Withee Malcolm Architects

Best On-the-Boards Affordable Housing Community: Africatown Plaza, Seattle
Developer: Africatown Community Land Trust; Builders: Absher Construction and MAD Construction; Architects: GGLO in collaboration with David Baker Architects

Best Affordable Senior Housing Community: Casa de la Misión, San Francisco
Developer: Mercy Housing; Builder: Roberts/Obayashi; Architects: HKIT Architects and YA Studio

Best Supportive/Transitional Housing: Flor 401 Lofts, Los Angeles
Developer: Skid Row Housing Trust; Builder: Morley Builders; Architect: Koning Eizenberg Architecture

Judges' Special Award: The Other Side Village, Salt Lake City
Developer: The Other Side Academy; Architect: Denton House Design Studio
